Is Air Conditioning Right For Your Home?

More Than Summer Cooling

Modern residential air conditioning can provide both cooling and heating, giving you greater control over the comfort of individual rooms throughout the year.

The right solution depends on the room, its size and layout, how it is used and what you want the space to feel like.

Year-Round Use

The AirLuxe Difference

More Than Simply Fitting A Unit.

Good residential air conditioning starts with the home, not the equipment.

Before recommending a system, we consider how the room is used, its size and layout, where units can be positioned and how the finished installation will sit within the property.

The aim is a solution that performs properly while feeling considered within your home, from the system selected to the routing and finishing details.

01
Considered System Selection

Equipment is selected around the requirements of the room rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

02
Thoughtful Unit Positioning

Indoor and outdoor unit locations are considered with comfort, performance and the appearance of the property in mind.

03
Careful Installation Finish

Pipework, drainage, cabling and finishing details are planned to keep the completed installation as neat and discreet as practical.

Depending on the system selected, control may be available through a remote, wall controller or compatible smart features and apps.

System Dependent
Tailored To Your System

Features, controls and performance vary between manufacturers and models. We will explain the relevant options when discussing the right system for your home.

Efficiency, Explained

Is air conditioning energy efficient?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Modern fixed split systems can be highly efficient.

A permanently installed air conditioning system does not simply turn electricity into an equal amount of heating or cooling. It uses a refrigeration cycle to move heat, and modern inverter systems can adjust their output as the room approaches the temperature you have set.

The efficiency and running cost of any installation still depend on the system selected, correct sizing, the property, weather, temperature settings, usage and your electricity tariff.

GOOD TO KNOW A 2.5 kW air conditioner does not mean it continuously uses 2.5 kW of electricity.

The kW figure normally describes the system's cooling capacity, not its electrical consumption. Fixed split systems are commonly assessed using seasonal efficiency measures such as SEER for cooling and SCOP for heating. Higher seasonal efficiency means more heating or cooling is delivered for the electricity used.

Is Air Conditioning Worth It?

It depends on what you want from your home.

01 Cooling When Your Home Overheats

Fixed air conditioning can provide controlled cooling in bedrooms, living spaces, home offices and other rooms that remain uncomfortable during warmer weather.

02 Heating From The Same System

Reversible systems can also provide heating, giving you another way to warm individual rooms when additional comfort is needed.

03 Control Where You Need It

A correctly designed system can let you focus heating or cooling on the spaces you are using rather than treating every room in the home in exactly the same way.

Whether air conditioning is worthwhile is personal to the property and household. Independent guidance below covers the benefits, limitations, costs and suitability of fixed air-to-air systems so you can make an informed decision before arranging an installation.

Illustrative Running Cost Guide

What could it cost per hour?

These examples use representative published electrical input figures for residential fixed split systems together with Ofgem's average Direct Debit electricity unit rate of 26.11p/kWh for Great Britain, applicable from 1 July to 30 September 2026.

Typical Space Typical System Size* Illustrative Cost*
Bedroom / Home Office Smaller residential space
~2.5 kW
~13–18p per hour
Living Room Medium residential space
~3.3–3.5 kW
~20–29p per hour
Larger / Open-Plan Space Subject to room assessment
~5.0 kW
~36–39p per hour
*A guide, not a guaranteed running cost.

The examples use representative published electrical input figures from residential fixed split systems. They are not a quotation for a particular model or property.

Ofgem's average Direct Debit electricity unit rate is 26.11p/kWh for Great Britain from 1 July to 30 September 2026. Ofgem has also published an average rate of 26.32p/kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026. Your actual tariff and regional rate may differ.

Actual consumption can be higher or lower as inverter systems adjust their output. Room conditions, weather, temperature setting, system selection and how long the system operates will also affect electricity use.

Room type and system size are indicative only. Correct sizing depends on factors including room dimensions, ceiling height, glazing, insulation, orientation and heat gain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Homeowners Usually Ask.

Every home and installation is different, but these are some of the questions we are commonly asked before a home survey.

01 Does air conditioning heat as well as cool? +

Many modern residential air conditioning systems can provide both cooling and heating, making them useful for year-round room-by-room comfort.

04 How much does residential air conditioning cost? +

Pricing depends on factors such as the number of rooms, system selected, unit positioning and the complexity of the installation. A tailored quotation is provided after the property and requirements have been assessed.

05 How often should an air conditioning system be serviced? +

Regular servicing helps support efficient operation, reliability and long-term system performance. The appropriate service interval can depend on the system and how it is used.
